Low salary: increase take-home
Few days back one of my close friend joined a new company. Normally i don't like to discuss the salaries. But, this times some how this conversation came in our way. With in that conversation i have realized that he got a hike in percentages. He was always comparing the salaries. In my opinion comparing figures in finance might not be a very good idea. So i did some google to dig up some facts about the salary breakup & here is the essence. Your views are welcome. If you have some different opinion or suggestions I would be highly obliged to know them. Again, reading is completely voluntary.

Every year any working guy waits for this season. In information industry it is called hike season. But all the industries are some how driven by finance. Here you happily receive a hike letter telling you that you have got 20 per cent increase in salary. But at a later point of time you realize that your take home is increased by 10 per cent or less. This scenario is applicable to both for new joiners as well as any existing employee receiving hike.

'Cost to company' is the factor that drives your increment in employer's mind. You would be more concerned with the take-home pay. Besides immediate liquidity (the money you have at any point of time to spend), it also affects your eligibility of loan to a great extent i.e. when you apply for home loan or car loan. Bank calculates your eligibility on the basis of your take-home instead of CTC. So we must know a bit more about all important of our 'salary structure'.

As we all know that basic component of our salary are basic pay, dearness allowance and some more benefits which are partially or fully tax exempted under head salary.

Further, there are retirement benefit contributions like provident fund in which both employee and employer contribute and the superannuation fund(the fund that we invest for our retirement). Earlier, this contribution was taxable as fringe benefit tax(any other money employer pays for your benefits e.g. gifts, food coupons etc.), but now a contribution up to Rs 100,000 into a superannuation fund is not taxable under FBT.

In the last union budget finance minister has increased the limit of basic exemption from 100000 to 110000. But for the highly payed salaried employees they have increased the education tax from 1 per cent to 3 per cent. Further for the income above 10 lacs now we have extra surcharge of 10 per cent of income tax.

Let us take four salary slabs and how one can increase the tax benefits. But before that, Let us take a simple example of take-home salary calculation. For this, from the gross package one has to deduct professional tax, income tax, medical claim premium, investment in tax saving instruments and provident fund contribution from the total salary (See Tax Burden).

Here I assume that for investment under section 80C, the employee will take into account his provident fund contribution. He will invest in tax saving instruments over and above this contribution, if necessary. Therefore, in the case of salaries over Rs 15 lakh (Rs 1.5 million) (scenarios III and IV), the employee does not have to make any other investment. The employee has contributed more than 100,000 in provident fund, so for calculation of take-home pay, I have deduct this contribution, which is in excess of Rs 100,000.

Rs 5-10 lakh bracket

You can make the following changes:

  • Ask for telephone reimbursement instead of telephone allowance. The former is fully tax exempt, the latter fully taxable.
  • Send your children to employer-owned educational institution as you can get a tax benefit of Rs 1000 per month instead of Rs 100 that you would get otherwise.
  • Go for paid vouchers or coupons instead of a lunch allowance, as it is fully taxable. The former is-tax free up to an amount of Rs 50 per day.
  • Opting to provide bills of travel from home to office and vice versa, which are completely tax exempt instead of going for transport allowance which limits your tax exemption to Rs 800 per month.

Rs 15 lakh

Besides the above, you can also add:

  • A free car facility over conveyance allowance
  • Servant allowance, if being used for official purposes

Rs 20 lakh

  • Besides the above, you can add:
  • Free bungalow/apartment (taxed only at 10 per cent of fair rent paid for such accommodation)

These are a few measures that you can take to increase your take-home salary.
